Madden has once again topped sales charts in the month of August. Though NPD numbers won’t be out for several weeks, EA has already issued a statement talking up the game’s success in August, trumpeting it as the best selling game last month.
“Madden NFL 11 is the number one selling game in August, and the game has created enormous enthusiasm in the online community,” said EA Sports president Peter Moore in the statement. “Each day on consoles, fans are playing as many games online as the equivalent of 750 full NFL seasons.”
The press release offers up various facts to brag about the game’s success, including the Ultimate Team mode helping to boost digital revenues 200% over Madden NFL 10. More than two million games of Madden are played online each day, and 20% of players have tried out the Online Team Play game mode.
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Madden would lead the way in August; it’s been the top-selling game in the United States for at leas the past two years, according to NPD data. Madden NFL 10 saw decreased sales over the previous year’s game, and yet it still managed to take two of the top three sales spots, including the number one overall spot.
EA claims that sales of Madden are up “approximately 5%” over last year on all platforms in August. It didn’t provide specific sales figures — we’ll have to wait for the NPDs later this month for those — but if the 5% increase holds true for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, the former of which has traditionally been the top seller, it should sell around 975,000 copies on 360 and 698,250 copies on PS3.
