Mass Effect 3 Demo Shows the Absurdity of Xbox Live Gold

Downloading the upcoming February 14 Mass Effect 3 demo will upgrade the subscriptions of Xbox Live Silver members to Gold so that all players can sample the game’s multiplayer before its release on March 6. The temporary upgrade system that the demo takes advantage of indicates that Xbox Live as we know it is so outdated that it can’t cope with offering users a single demo. The current XBL Gold/Silver division needs to change. After five years of Microsoft’s biggest competitor...

OP-ED: THQ and Ignition Troubles Show That Gamer Taste Threatens the Industry

Posted by on Feb 02, 2012 | Leave a Comment

This week was not kind to video game publishers. THQ announced plans for 240 lay-offs amidst the board of directors and CEO giving themselves a 50% paycut. Meanwhile, Disney bought a controlling stake in India-based UTV Ignition — a publisher which went through its own set of lay-offs and restructuring last year — for an undisclosed sum after the Indian government approved the deal which had reportedly been in the works since at least last summer. Disney plans to use the firm to expand...

OP-ED: Does Final Fantasy XIII-2 Represent the End of Square, or a New Beginning?

Posted by on Feb 02, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Earlier this week, Gamasutra published a scathing criticism of Final Fantasy XIII-2 penned by our colleague (and occasional Retronauts podcast guest) Christian Nutt. Though contextualized through an extended comparison to Red Letter Media’s popular video critiques of the Star Wars prequel films, his commentary touched upon many of the same points and concerns I addressed in my own review of the game. Where our opinions differ, I think, is in our ultimate conclusion of XIII-2’s merits...

Mass Effect 3’s demo will allow players temporary access to Xbox Live’s Gold service, allowing them to experience the game’s new online mode. Speaking on its official forum, the game’s developer Bioware confirmed that when players download the demo they will be given a “limited time Gold access”. No specifics have been announced, but presumably the download will come with a code granting a short amount of online access. The much-anticipated demo of Mass Effect...

By March 31, Bungie will no longer update stats or service records, host user generated content, or operate Bungie Pro through Bungie.net. Going forward, all future Halo support will be offered by Microsoft and 343 Industries through Halo Waypoint....

Microsoft does typically hold a Spring Showcase in San Francisco ahead of the Game Developer’s Conference, and this year’s has already been announced, though Halo 4 hasn’t been mentioned...

Xbox 360 Game News: Halo Transfer From Bungie To 343 Industries Ends On March 31

Microsoft revealed long ago that its internal studio 343 Industries would be taking the reins on the Halo franchise from Bungie Studios now that the franchise creator is an independent operator. The handover isn’t as simple as signing a few papers and getting the locks changed, however. The transfer of Halo user data from Bungie to 343 started last summer, and Bungie now confirms that the process will be finished on March 31 of this year. What does this mean in practical terms? A Bungie blog...
