3DS in 2012: Coming Soon to a Handheld Near You

Posted by on Jan 05, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Despite all the flack the system received at launch for its lack of software, the tides have most certainly changed for Nintendo’s newest handheld. Thanks to the boost of the holiday season and the support of some huge software releases (most notable Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7), the 3DS has already pushed past the 4 million units sold mark in both Japan and the U.S., and has even sold more than both the Wii and DS did in their respective first nine months on the market. But the 3DS...

Update About eShop Updates: Happy New Year, eShop fans, and welcome to a 2012 switcheroo. We’ve decided to try something a little different with the formatting of our weekly roundup for Nintendo digital game reviews, so there’s no “eShop Update” container article this week. Instead, the four new releases across DSiWare, WiiWare and 3DSWare are all getting their own standalone and promoted reviews. The one you’re reading now is for Samurai Sword Destiny, and you can jump...

In its second Nintendo Direct broadcast the day after Christmas, Nintendo revealed games like Resident Evil Revelations and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D would be receiving downloadable demos. There was just one question: would territories outside Japan be receiving those demos? As far as Resident Evil Revelations is concerned, that answer is “yes.” Capcom has confirmed a demo is indeed on the way to North America and Europe, though no specific timetable was provided. With Revelations...

Following its mid-December debut in which it sold over 321,000 units (later reported to be closer to 325,000), the system has not continued to enjoy the same degree of sales success. In its second week, the system sold 72,479 units (compared with 101,121 PlayStation Portable units and 482,200 3DS units), and now in its third week, covering December 26 through January 1, the system sold just 42,648, again trailing the PSP at 62,746 and 3DS at 197,952. These numbers come courtesy of Media Create,...

Nintendo DS Game News: LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Is Coming This Summer

We all knew that this would be official before long. Too much seemingly hard evidence has surfaced pointing to a second LEGO Batman game for it not to be a Thing. And Warner Interactive has now confirmed it. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is coming to a gaming platform near you this summer, a press release reveals. That means: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Windows PC, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. No WonderSwan though. Sorry all. The DC Super Heroes subtitle means that you’re...

3DS: Let the Games Begin

What a difference Mario and Monster Hunter can make. With the holidays now behind us, Nintendo’s fledgling 3DS system is rapidly approaching its one-year anniversary. Despite a rough debut, the system is now rapidly gaining steam, not only outpacing its predecessor, but the remarkable success of the Wii home console as well. Few would accuse either of those platforms of being sales disasters – and now the much-critiqued 3DS is surging past them. It has now crossed the 4 million units...

Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater is only a couple months out from its U.S. release, and it seems Konami already has plans to help push its first 3DS remake. As reported by our friends over at Andriasang, Konami revealed via Twitter its plans to release an MGS 3DS hardware bundle. Kojima himself later confirmed that the bundle would feature a unique 3DS with a faux snakeskin design. Ready, set, PETA. No news yet on whether this bundle will be making its way to the States, but more details are set...

The 3DS is still not even a year old and already it has sold over 4 million units in the United States alone. It was not long ago that Nintendo revealed the 3DS had surpassed first-year sales of the original DS, selling over 2.37 million units as of the beginning of December. We know 795,000 3DS units were sold in November, and it seems December was another big sales month for Nintendo’s newest handheld gaming system, though we won’t get NPD sales figures until later next week. Nintendo...
