First Year 3DS Sales in U.S. on Pace to Surpass DS’ Debut Year

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

There has been much said about the slow sales of the 3DS early in its life. And it’s not as if it was just a creation of the media or fanboys — it was failing to meet expectations to the point where Nintendo decided to drop its price by $80 in August, not even six months after it first went on sale. Besides the money it’s losing — which will contribute to the company’s first annual loss in 30-plus years — this drop might cause consumers to be wary of picking...

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the greatest Zelda game ever created. It’s the best game for Wii and one of the finest video game accomplishments of the past 10 years. The game has once again raised the bar and forged new territory for an iconic and innovative franchise. It’s not enough that it finally establishes a powerful, stirring origin story or that it features near-perfect pacing. What puts Skyward Sword over the top is its layered, dense, absolutely perfect gameplay that...

Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive! Review

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Picture Lives! did not impress me. That’s what this game was called when Nintendo first showed it off back at June’s E3 Expo 2011, and its lone demo station sitting nearly hidden among a collection of Mario Kart 7s, Kid Icarus: Uprisings and Super Mario 3D Lands seemed terribly out of place. I tried it, promptly got confused by the mess of odd content paraded before my eyes and came away so perplexed that I ultimately recommended that Nintendo just kill off the project then and there. Now,...

Castle Conqueror — Heroes Review

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

If you’re a regular follower of each week’s eShop Updates, don’t let this one get you too confused — it’s called “Castle Conqueror — Heroes” and it actually is a different game than “Castle Conqueror — Revolution” from a few weeks ago. Very different, in fact. So different that’s it kind of weird that they’d be branded so similarly. While Revolution was a beginner’s RTS set in a fantasy world, Heroes is instead a...

Step Up Review

OK, seriously? They’re charging money for this? I swear, sometimes it seems like Nintendo is actively trying to make WiiWare look like a joke by greenlighting “games” like this. It boggles the mind. Step Up is an offensively unpolished, ridiculously limited exercise game. It intends for you to use it as a way to “burn all the calories you ever dreamed of burning.” I’d rather burn my house down after playing it. The single bland, boring environment populated by...

Bloons Tower Defense Review

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

This is a name you’ve certainly heard before, as Bloons Tower Defense is a widely recognized web game that’s also made its way to mobile phones and Sony’s PSP prior to today. This new DSiWare edition marks its debut on a Nintendo platform, though, and what’s being delivered is a pretty good take on good old Bloons TD. The game is a beginner’s version of tower defense gameplay. Each stage gives you a winding path on the ground that an army of balloons will march across...

Behind the Scenes of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Our review of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be posted later tonight. In honor of the release of the game, we spoke with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma and music supervisor Koji Kondo just prior to the recent Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Concert. Even if you’ve read our excerpts, both men had even more to say than we’ve been able to cover previously, so the following is our full interview with the two Zelda legends. IGN: We know that Link will be using a harp in Skyward Sword....

Nintendo eShop Update: Freakyforms

Posted by on Nov 10, 2011 | Leave a Comment

It took them all the way until November, but Nintendo’s finally presenting an original, first-party published “3DSWare” title. Up until now we’ve only seen a handful of eShop exclusives before, and they’ve all been 3D Classics remakes of old games or third-party titles like Let’s Golf 3D and Pyramids. But, at last, Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive! has arrived to show that the Big N’s latest digital download destination will indeed be getting some unique...
