Eying its dwindling pile of chips, THQ uneasily shuffled its hand yesterday and traded in a couple cards. The latest moves by the struggling publisher have bumped the South Park RPG to next year, allowing THQ to create what could be the winning hand it desperately needs in early 2013.
In THQ’s quarterly financial statement it announced that the Obsidian-developed, class- and turn-based South Park RPG has been bumped from late 2012 to early 2013. That sets THQ up to release three big games...

Hi-Rez showed me something with Tribes: Ascend — a level of polish, quality, and balanced fun I simply wasn’t expecting. Now the studio is getting ready to fire up its next project, and as a long-time DOTA and League of Legends fan, I’m already clicking my mouse in anticipation. Smite, Hi-Rez’s mythological, third-person spin on the MOBA genre is set to enter closed beta in two weeks.
It’s got the minions, towers, three lanes, shops, and 5v5 battles of traditional MOBAs,...

We learn today, to no one’s great surprise, that Volition, Inc. is working on a fourth Saints Row game, apparently for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms. The sort-of-confirmation comes from a LinkedIn profile for a Volition game designer, as spotted by the gaming Internet’s super-sleuth, Superannuation (via Polygon). The Saints Row 4 shout has since been edited out of the profile.
Saints Row: The Third has made big money for THQ since it launched in late 2011, so much so...

BioWare is preparing to release another multiplayer DLC pack for Mass Effect 3, an accidental (and now-removed) posting on the Sony Asia website reveals. The information was snatched up by Kotaku and preserved for the gaming Internet to peruse… so peruse away.
The DLC — which the removed web listing says is out as of today, May 16, 2012 — will add two new maps, three new weapons and six new classes to the game. If it’s anything like the previous Resurgence DLC pack, it’ll...

According to an ad spotted by game blog Kotaku, Guild Wars 2’s release date is June 28. Before you mark your calendar in pen though, the ad was supposedly spotted at a Fry’s in Texas, and retailers are notorious for using estimated dates for retail products. So it’s unconfirmed.
Developers NCsoft has this to say in a statement:
"We have not released an official launch date within 2012 as feedback from our closed and open marketing betas will help us determine an exact...

Midnight. Diablo 3 is downloaded, installed, and awaiting the witching hour when the servers unlock so I can begin my descent into Hell. The time comes. I enter my Battle.net login info, click “Play,” and… get a message that “The servers are busy at this time. Please try again later. (Error 37)” Oh, goody.
Stay awhile, and listen, and get drunk.
My fears about the consequence of depending on online servers to allow access to what, for many people, will be a single-player...

Cloud gaming is a great idea in concept. Being able to stream games to any device and play, regardless of the hardware you own is an immensely attractive and frugal idea. But the only real retailer in the field is OnLive, and their service, while pretty solid, can feel clunky and laggy. Now, Nvidia is hoping to take the next step by introducing GeForce GRID, its own game streaming service.
There’s a bunch of science behind why Nvidia’s product will supposedly be a heck of a lot better...

Over my vacation last week, I managed to get together with some friends for my first LAN party in about five years. I could write an entire column on just what is so special about LAN gaming, and why voice chat and a fast internet connection still doesn’t replace that party feeling, but I’d rather focus on the game that stole the show: Kohan. After several rounds of Unreal Tournament and Ghost Recon: Island Thunder, our host urged us to try Kohan: Ahrimen’s Gift, and over the next...
