We got the chance to check out XCOM: Enemy Unknown at PAX East 2012 and Eric "The Boss" Eckstein let us know why the game’s cinematic experience is so riveting: "In the middle of issuing orders to a soldier, we cut to an in-game cutscene, eyeing Sectoids who are clustered, almost as if feeding, around a human corpse. They scatter off, and their "turn" begins, seamlessly after the cinematic ends. This happens again later when we meet another race of aliens, Mutons,...

Developer Nippon Ichi has issued a preview video of its upcoming turn-based role-playing game, Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention for the PlayStation Vita. The trailer goes through briefly some of the new aspects of the gameplay, such as using the touchscreens for controlling the camera. Among these changes is the inclusion of GPS support, which tracks actual player movement while playing the game. This feature grants the player an in-game stat called "Honor Quotient," and this stat boost...

Remember 2009, when we were fixated on the original Borderlands? Three years later, having spent countless hours Phase-blasting bandits, we still haven’t had our fill of vault-hunter combat fantasies. Fortunately, 2K Games and Gearbox Software are bringing back our favorite RPS (role-playing shooter) in a sequel called Borderlands 2. We recently had the chance to play this new work in progress and what were our impressions? Let’s just say that if they release game is as good as the...

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion Preview

I’ve never seen anything quite like what Ironclad Games is doing with their RTS hit Sins of a Solar Empire. More than four years after the original game was released, I was surprised to hear that a new expansion pack is on the way. For those keeping count, that’s more than three years since the Entrenchment expansion was released, and two years since the mini add-on Diplomacy came out. I never would have expected Sins to get more content, but I’m glad that Ironclad went...

We check out the bizarre results of Idea Factory’s latest work.   Here’s a fun fact about Mugen Souls, a quirky little role-playing number from Idea Factory: the game was produced by an unnamed developer calling himself the new Keiji Inafune (that is, the Mega Man creator who left Capcom to form his own studio). The “new Keiji Inafune” stint was nothing more than a publicity stunt to get people turning their heads to the game. What’s even more surprising is that...
