Halo is apparently set for a live-action incarnation…just not on the big screen as years of rumors and speculation seemed to indicate. Microsoft’s big unveiling today of its new console, Xbox One (an event which, if we still had a staff of videogame journalists, we would have been ALL over) would come with kind of a non-gaming surprise. Directorial deity, Steven Spielberg appeared via video to reveal that he will be involved as executive producer with a live-action Halo TV series,...

Sacred Citadel is content with how unremarkable it is. In a niche populated with the likes of Castle Crashers, that’s not something to be proud of. This side-scrolling beat-em-up role-playing hybrid is a timesink that starts off great, but gets old very quickly. If you’re a fan of the genre, there are better alternatives.
Sacred Citadel is visually appealing, but nothing about it stands out. It employs an aesthetic that suggests a three-dimensional cartoony vibe and sticks with it...

Most of the opinions I have about games stay the same; I can look back at most of the games I’ve reviewed and stand by my opinions on them. But like all human beings, I’m capable of erring, and that’s exactly what I did with last year’s Dragon’s Dogma: I got it wrong. Now, don’t take that the wrong way: it’s nowhere near perfect. But I allowed the frustrations I had with the game to get the better of me and ultimately blind me to all of the great ideas...

With 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot under the belt, I suppose it was only a matter of time before developer NetherRealm Studios returned to the other property they could freely develop with: DC Comics. Sure, the two have history in the form of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but I think that most people agree that Mortal Kombat is best in two dimensions. So we can essentially look at Injustice: Gods Among Us as a DC fighter built with the Mortal Kombat template. It’s not as good as that...

The original Dead Island was good, dumb fun that unfortunately wore out its welcome long before the end credits rolled. The joy of dismembering and mutilating the undead quickly gave way to tedium, while the structure of the game never graduated past mere fetch quest monotony. Dead Island: Riptide is merely more of the same, which is not exactly forgivable in this day and age.
Dead Island: Riptide isn’t a looker, but neither is it totally offensive to the eyes. You know, just like Dead...

Each year one has to wonder with any sports title, “How much more can the graphics improve?” In the case of a title like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, the answer is

As you know, 1UP.com has breathed its last. Such are the vicissitudes of business. Happily, Jose Otero managed to pull together a startling number of former 1UP staff during Game Developers Conference this year for one final podcast. Not everyone was there due to the last-minute nature of this show (or because they had other duties that kept them away), but if you paid any attention at all to the site for the 10 years it lived you’re bound to hear some voices you recognize in this three-hour...

I like The Walking Dead, but I don’t love it. I like dark, but only if it’s suffused with some amount of light. That light can be anything from humor to hope, no matter how small. I can’t help feeling that Robert Kirkman’s post-apocalyptic phenomenon lacks both; it’s a black hole of bleakness and despair, and by design. There’s obviously an appetite for this kind of fare, and I’m reluctant to chalk it up to the tired-as-hell zombie craze. Telltale’s...

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 was not made with gamers like me in mind, and I respect that. I’ve never been a fan of the Naruto franchise, but I recognize its popularity among anime fans, as well as action junkies in general. Having enjoyed Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations for what it was, I approached this game with an open mind. I came away from it with less enthusiasm than I expected. It has entertainment value, but as a game, it ultimately fails.
Naruto...

Gears of War: Judgment, the 4th game in Epic’s Gears of War franchise, is out this week (Tuesday 3/19) and so far the reviews are mostly positive! Personally I was beginning to tire of the Gears series so it’s great to hear the positive feedback on the new game; most of which complements the tweaks Epic, and co-developer People Can Fly (Bulletstorm), made to the campaign’s structure. Of course, multiplayer is a big part of Gears of War and Judgment’s new mode OverRun is also...
