PSP Game: Ys I and II Chronicles

Remakes and re-releases are always tricky business. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, though some games are better left as memories. Ys I & II Chronicles is, as the name implies, a collection featuring redone versions of the first two Ys games. Over the last 20 years, the series has maintained a loyal following, and although newer games have helped to expand that following, the remake may not appeal to newer fans the way it will for older ones. To give credit where credit it due, Chronicles offers...

Online versions out in April; Blu-Ray and DVD versions out in June. The third game in the Valkyria Chronicles series has been staying healthy on the charts in Japan. Following in the footsteps of the first two games, Sega will not only be releasing the anime adaptation of Valkyria Chronicles 3, subtitled Tagatame no Juusou, on native soil next month, but will also offer bonus missions for those who purchase them. According to Sega’s official Original Video Animation site, the first part...

The Super Nintendo classic returns as a complete package for the PlayStation Portable.   It’s hard to believe that it has been 20 years since we initially accompanied the dark knight Cecil and the dragoon Kain on their mission to the Village of Mist. The story in Final Fantasy IV explored themes such as love, betrayal, friendship, and devotion, which ultimately set the tone and style of the many Final Fantasy games to come, according to the original game’s designer, Takashi Tokita....

GDC: Why I Suddenly Care About Patapon 3

Posted by on Mar 03, 2011 | Leave a Comment

A funny thing happened when the Patapon 3 multiplayer beta released last summer — I didn’t give a damn. That might not sound strange, but I’m the guy who declared Patapon 2 the best PSP game of all time and put some ungodly amount of hours into that sequel. I thought that I’d be unable to put Patapon 3 down, but when I booted up the discombobulated mess of online options, I just wanted to turn it off. Patapon 3 faded into the shadows, the game missed its fall release date,...

Seeing as how GDC is all about developers, it makes sense that Sony’s newest system — the NGP — is in the house. We’ve already brought you Uncharted Portable news from the official NGP panel, but that’s just the tip of the NGP iceberg. Direct to Drive Community Manager Walter Lopez and me, IGN Vagabond Greg Miller, had our iPhone 4s in hand when we ran into the Next Generation Portable here at GDC, so take a look at some of our beauty shots. GDC: Sony Details NGP Card Format

Today at the Games Developers Conference, Sony held a panel for their upcoming handheld, the Next Generation Portable. Though a bulk of the discussion was focused on information previously announced last month in Tokyo, we were able to learn more about the device’s new flash memory game format, tentatively dubbed NVG Card. The new format will come in two storage capacities, 2GBs and 4GBs, which Sony says will be used for small and large NGP games, respectively. The smaller card is likely to...

GDC: Uncharted NGP’s Dos and Don’ts

Posted by on Mar 02, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Let’s be clear: Uncharted Portable is a real game, but everything we’ve seen so far is just a tech demo and completely out of context. That said, I’d still pay money for the unfinished combat, gyroscope controls and beautiful graphics, but it’s got to drop the goofy touch functionality. If you missed it, the NGP was announced a few weeks ago and is “the next generation portable.” Basically, it’s the PSP2. The device packs a sexy touch screen, two analog sticks,...
