PlayStation Network Going Down for Half a Day

If your plans for Thursday include being online on the PlayStation Network, you may want to start coming up with a backup plan now. Sony will be taking the service down for roughly 14 hours tomorrow. Sony says this is merely for routine maintenance, though if that were the case, it’d be nice if it were scheduled to take place at night — PSN will be offline from 8am until 10pm Pacific (11am to 1am Eastern) on November 17. During that stretch you won’t be able to access the PlayStation...

PSP-to-Vita Game Transfers Tied to One PSN Account

Posted by on Nov 14, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Late last week, we got some great news for PSP owners distressed over the fact that PlayStation Vita can’t accommodate their UMD collections. Sony’s Passport Program for Vita is the solution to all of that, allowing players to download a program for the PSP starting on December 6th which will allow the transfer of PSP games to the Vita at a lower cost. However, news from Japanese blog Andriasang has some information that was overlooked when this program was announced. The key detail is...

Not even a week after the official Steam forums were taken offline following their defacement, Sony has been forced to do the same with the official website and forums for the Resistance franchise. MyResistance.net and the accompanying free-to-play Global Resistance game are currently inaccessible. According to Kotaku, Sony took them offline following reports of the site distributing malware, presumably at the behest of hackers. As the site is owned and operated by Sony, series developer Insomniac...

Battlefield 3 Tops Batman: Arkham City in October NPDs

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

It may not have been able to top Call of Duty: Black Ops when it comes to being the most popular game played on Xbox Live, but Battlefield 3 was — at least for a month — able to take the top spot on the NPD sales charts for October. Battlefield 3 came in at “just under” 2 million units across all platforms in the United States. That’s not a terrible figure for a game released at a time where it had only five days to track in the month, but compared with today’s...

Downloading Your PSP UMD Games on Vita Will Cost You

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 | Leave a Comment

PlayStation Vita may not have gone digital-only — it’s not the right time, Sony says — but that won’t help should you want to play your PlayStation Portable’s UMD games on the system. With no UMD slot, those games might as well be Coleco cartridges. Sony does see a business opportunity here and, as previously reported, will allow UMD game owners to purchase a digital version on Vita. Sony has now offered details on this functionality along with prices for how much...

Sony has announced a scheme that will allow users with a UMD collection to transfer their titles to the PlayStation Vita at a discounted cost. If you want to take up the offer, you must download a special program for your PSP from December 6, as well as the game you wish to carry over to your Vita. The program will allow you to register the game, allowing you to download it for Vita at a cut price. Many third-party publishers are taking part in the scheme, including Square Enix, Sega, Capcom and...

Posted by on Nov 08, 2011 | Leave a Comment

You may have already read about Ubisoft’s unprecedented deal with Sony Pictures to make the Assassin’s Creed movie. The news of this arrangement sent shockwaves not only through Hollywood, but through the gaming industry as well. Such is the topic of this week’s Sessler’s Soapbox. Do game companies need to have this much control over their intellectual properties to make sure they’re not ruined by the movie making process? Or is this just an example of an incredibly...
