E3 2011: Dynasty Warriors Vita — Nice Touch

I have a complicated relationship with the hack ’n’ slash Dynasty Warriors series. On one hand, I understand and appreciate the franchise’s straight-forward gameplay and emphasis on player empowerment. On the other hand, Dynasty Warriors bores me to tears. For years, I’ve gotten by with mashing a single button and blocking an occasional attack. It’s a simple, repetitive system that rarely keeps my attention for more than an hour. But Dynasty Warriors Vita (working title)...

E3 2011: Is PlayStation Vita Region Free?

In a PlayStation Vita session for European and Australian press at E3 today, Michael Denny, Sony’s Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, confirmed that – to the best of his knowledge – Vita would be region free. This means games from any region will play on systems from any region. This is in line with the PlayStation 3 – which is also region free, but not with the 3DS, which has region restrictions. Good news for PlayStation fans who want to check out niche Japanese...

Japan Review Check: Ocarina of Time 3DS

Not too many games coming out next week in Japan, but they’re all worth your attention. Here’s what’s due to hit shelves, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine: - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (9/9/9/10, 37 points): Nobody was expecting a bad review of this 3DS remake, definitely. “The game’s the same,” one writer said, “but being able to play Ocarina on a portable is really amazing. The hard-but-not-too-hard play balance is still there,...

Bamco Head Reflects on Mergers and Western Development

In 2005, oldschool Japanese game makers Namco and Bandai merged together to form a single company, Namco Bandai Games. The team-up didn’t have quite the fanfare of Square Enix’s two years previous, but for the game industry over there, it was an even bigger blockbuster — two of the oldest, most prestigious toy companies in Japan, two outfits where the corporate culture couldn’t possibly be any more difficult, coming together and trying to make it work. Shukuo Ishikawa,...

Level-5, the Fukuoka, Japan-based developer of the Professor Layton and White Knight Chronicles series, has made a lot of progress since its founding in 1998. Originally a hardcore RPG developer working mainly for Sony, the company began publishing its own titles in Japan starting four years ago, starting with worldwide million-seller Professor Layton and the Curious Village and moving on with the kid-centric Inazuma Eleven series in Japan. It’s been a particularly long Journey for Akihiro...

E3 2011: The Dueling Control Schemes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Having had the chance to try out a number of PlayStation Vita titles over the last two days, I’ve quickly come to realize that my overarching skepticism about “control gimmicks” has been a little misguided. While I certainly don’t want to play a vast majority of games that involve anything but a comfortable controller or portable in my hands, there are exceptions. Zack & Wiki on Wii is one of them. Sports Champions using the PlayStation Move is another. And after playing...

E3 2011: BioShock for Vita is an All-New Game

Posted by on Jun 07, 2011 | Leave a Comment

When Irrational Games’ Ken Levine told the crowd at Sony’s E3 2011 press conference that a BioShock game was being created for the Vita, he didn’t divulge much information. Levine recently clarified to IGN that the BioShock game being made for Sony’s in-development handheld system is not a version of Infinite and not a remake of the original BioShock. “It’s a different project. It’s its own thing being built from the ground up,” said Levine. “That...

Some more information about the PlayStation Vita was released via the Official PlayStation Blog via a FAQ, but some of the info provided actually raises more questions than it answers. Firstly, the Vita will have a staggered launch across multiple territories, with everyone seeing the system by the end of the year.
