There’s a story behind Moon Diver, though at some point, it blends into the background. It’s pure old school arcade action, which is what the game, despite its many bumps, succeeds in delivering. Still, those bumps are major obstacles.
You probably won’t know what’s going on half the time, but at least Moon Diver attempts to put on a good show. The game leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to variety, though the few look-a-like enemies you’ll slice your way through...

NASCAR The Game 2011 borrows a page from DiRT 2 (a better racing game) for presentation inspiration, having all the Options Menus located in some sort of garage. Putting you right in the middle of the behind-the-scenes action works wonders when trying to build the sense of immersion that’s so crucial to this medium. However, DiRT 2 was a better-looking game, too, so all it really did was remind me that DiRT 3 is right around the corner. I’m sorry; that’s not at all fair to NASCAR...

Yakuza 4 aims for realism almost the whole way through, which often makes it come across as a sterile experience. It fails to impress visually, but given the gameplay experience, I’m not sure the developers were really trying for that. This game didn’t exactly fall out of the ugly tree or anything; it just doesn’t sport a creative look. The atmosphere is good, though; the hustle and bustle of Kamurocho really feels believable, even though the events that transpire in the metropolis...

Oh, Dragon Age II, I weep for what you could have been…
The graphics in Dragon Age II look quite nice. The first time. However, in what can only have been a cost-cutting measure, several of the area environments (“maps”) are reused. A lot. It wouldn’t be as bad if the areas were supposed to be the same place, as in “oh, I have another quest in the cave at the top of Sundermount,” but this is supposed to be unrelated quests in completely different locations and...

Once again, the next version of Tiger comes to your console, and once again it looks great. Admittedly, you may want to keep in mind that each year the game more or less contains very similar visuals, but this year features the Augusta National Golf Club as one of the many courses. For the most part, all of the visuals of EA Tiburon’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters – from the green of the grass to the Nike swoosh on Tiger’s ball – comes through with flying colors....

When was the last time you saw a 7,000 pound behemoth crush a puny stock car as if it were a pebble on the highway? How about the last time you went deaf from the roar of the mighty Big Foot as it spun donuts around the steel carcass of an unfortunate vehicular victim? If you have ever been to a Monster Truck show, then you know what sort of mayhem awaits in Monster Jam: Path of Destruction. Part sport, part spectacle, Monster Trucks are the automotive equivalent of professional wrestling; over the...

I have loved the Warriors games for years now. The Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors, and Warriors Orochi series are my favorite hack n’ slashes. I’ve spent countless hours playing them, so I was really happy to see a new one coming out, Warriors: Legends of Troy. Legends of Troy takes the series out of Asia and over to ancient Greece and the surrounding areas.
The graphics in Legend of Troy are quite amazing. The cutscenes make you feel like you’re watching a movie instead of...

Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel is the series’ third entry and its first on the PS3. As expected, the game has received a complete visual overhaul, ditching the low-res 2D sprites for beautiful, new 3D characters. However, Ar tonelico retains the series’ core gameplay and, well, let’s just say unique sense of humor.
I’ll always love the 2D sprites from the first two titles, but am happy to see that even though the characters have gained a dimension, they haven’t lost...

Hear me out. I know you might think I am delusional or a potential victim of Stockholm Syndrome, but I genuinely believe that videogames based on feature films are becoming better and (in my opinion) enjoyable. Don’t believe me? Give Rango the Videogame a shot. Based on the animated feature from Nickelodeon Pictures, Rango is a story about a chameleon that has a hard time blending into his new, western surroundings. The connecting tie-in accomplishes what so many franchise cash-ins fail to...

Aquattack is a cute little puzzle game whose aesthetics are firmly rooted in all things oceanic. Your game board consists of a grid made up of nautical ropes and each block in the grid contains a brightly colored tropical fish. The background behind the fish is a watery landscape where fish happily swim along, as underwater plants sway gently in the current and air bubbles slowly escape an ancient pot. Other characters that show up in the game include dangerous mines, mischievous looking electric...
