PS3 Game: Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel

Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel is the series’ third entry and its first on the PS3. As expected, the game has received a complete visual overhaul, ditching the low-res 2D sprites for beautiful, new 3D characters. However, Ar tonelico retains the series’ core gameplay and, well, let’s just say unique sense of humor. I’ll always love the 2D sprites from the first two titles, but am happy to see that even though the characters have gained a dimension, they haven’t lost...

PS3 Game: Rango the Videogame

Hear me out. I know you might think I am delusional or a potential victim of Stockholm Syndrome, but I genuinely believe that videogames based on feature films are becoming better and (in my opinion) enjoyable. Don’t believe me? Give Rango the Videogame a shot. Based on the animated feature from Nickelodeon Pictures, Rango is a story about a chameleon that has a hard time blending into his new, western surroundings. The connecting tie-in accomplishes what so many franchise cash-ins fail to...

PS3 Game: Aquattack

Aquattack is a cute little puzzle game whose aesthetics are firmly rooted in all things oceanic. Your game board consists of a grid made up of nautical ropes and each block in the grid contains a brightly colored tropical fish. The background behind the fish is a watery landscape where fish happily swim along, as underwater plants sway gently in the current and air bubbles slowly escape an ancient pot. Other characters that show up in the game include dangerous mines, mischievous looking electric...

PS3 Game: Killzone 3

I don’t envy the guys at Guerilla Games. From the start, the Killzone franchise was saddled with pressure – whether from consumers, the press or its publisher. The first was instantly labeled a “Halo-killer,” a moniker it didn’t quite meet. Killzone 2 managed to shut up naysayers, but not after spending months as the poster child for unfulfilled graphical promises. With Killzone 3, Guerilla not only has to live up to player expectations, but is also serving as a front-runner...

PS3 Game: Knights Contract

Knights Contract toys with the idea of being a great game. There are flashes of brilliance in this action experience, but most of them are rendered moot by a number of serious design flaws. However, Knights Contract has an intriguing premise and a decent story to back it up. This game’s strengths are not enough to warrant spending the full price of admission, but they do make it worth a look. The ruined world of Knights Contract inevitably invites unfavorable comparisons with last year’s...

PS3 Game: Hyperdimension Neptunia

By J.R. Nip’s (Chris) estimate, Hyperdimension Neptunia’s concept — the absurdity of the “Console Wars” — is something you would expect from an IGF entry. But, it’s an idea that’s just quirky enough to fit a JRPG. The concept is ripe for biting satire, and although the game manages to get in a few good ribs, it trips into yet another JRPG. When it comes to JRPGs, the chief question for fans always involves the voice dub. Rest assured, the original Japanese...

PS3 Game: Back to the Future The Game: Episode 1: It’s About Time

Movie-based games are usually tricky, but when dealing with a franchise as beloved as Back to the Future, it’s imperative to get everything right. Fortunately, when the idea for Back to the Future: The Game – Episode I: It’s About Time hit (which, I’m told, involved a fall from a toilet while trying to hang a clock), Telltale’s name sprung to mind. The way I see it, if you’re going to make a Back to the Future game, you might as well do it with some style. It’s...

PS3 Game: PixelJunk Shooter 2

PixelJunk Shooter 2 forgoes polygons in favor of solid colors and mesmerizing fluid physics. It looks like a Flash game with a high budget, and that’s exactly the right look for this title. Everything looks simple, yet the style pops in its own special way. The artists and level designers clearly worked with each other every step of the way, and as a result, PixelJunk Shooter 2 looks clean and confident from beginning to end. Most notable is the environmental design; though it doesn’t...

PS3 Game: Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds

It’s difficult to discuss franchise mash-ups without so much as a reference towards the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. And rightly so; it’s one of the most well-executed crossovers in the gaming world. If you’ve found yourself in an arcade at any point over the last decade and a half, chances are high that it had a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 machine. If it did, the chances are equally high that it was the most crowded machine in the room. The MvC series found success on...

PlayStation 2 Hits 150 Million Mark

As it crawls up to its eleventh year Sony’s PlayStation 2 has racked up another sales landmark as it’s announced the console has just shipped 150 million units. Sony’s official announcement came accompanied by some other eye-swelling stats – the PlayStation 2 can boast a library of 10,828 games, and it’s shifted 1.52 billion units of software since the system launched in Japan in March 2000. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains the top seller, having sold some 17.33...
