I don’t envy the guys at Guerilla Games. From the start, the Killzone franchise was saddled with pressure – whether from consumers, the press or its publisher. The first was instantly labeled a “Halo-killer,” a moniker it didn’t quite meet. Killzone 2 managed to shut up naysayers, but not after spending months as the poster child for unfulfilled graphical promises. With Killzone 3, Guerilla not only has to live up to player expectations, but is also serving as a front-runner...

Knights Contract toys with the idea of being a great game. There are flashes of brilliance in this action experience, but most of them are rendered moot by a number of serious design flaws. However, Knights Contract has an intriguing premise and a decent story to back it up. This game’s strengths are not enough to warrant spending the full price of admission, but they do make it worth a look.
The ruined world of Knights Contract inevitably invites unfavorable comparisons with last year’s...

By J.R. Nip’s (Chris) estimate, Hyperdimension Neptunia’s concept — the absurdity of the “Console Wars” — is something you would expect from an IGF entry. But, it’s an idea that’s just quirky enough to fit a JRPG. The concept is ripe for biting satire, and although the game manages to get in a few good ribs, it trips into yet another JRPG.
When it comes to JRPGs, the chief question for fans always involves the voice dub. Rest assured, the original Japanese...

Movie-based games are usually tricky, but when dealing with a franchise as beloved as Back to the Future, it’s imperative to get everything right. Fortunately, when the idea for Back to the Future: The Game – Episode I: It’s About Time hit (which, I’m told, involved a fall from a toilet while trying to hang a clock), Telltale’s name sprung to mind.
The way I see it, if you’re going to make a Back to the Future game, you might as well do it with some style. It’s...

PixelJunk Shooter 2 forgoes polygons in favor of solid colors and mesmerizing fluid physics. It looks like a Flash game with a high budget, and that’s exactly the right look for this title. Everything looks simple, yet the style pops in its own special way. The artists and level designers clearly worked with each other every step of the way, and as a result, PixelJunk Shooter 2 looks clean and confident from beginning to end. Most notable is the environmental design; though it doesn’t...

It’s difficult to discuss franchise mash-ups without so much as a reference towards the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. And rightly so; it’s one of the most well-executed crossovers in the gaming world. If you’ve found yourself in an arcade at any point over the last decade and a half, chances are high that it had a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 machine. If it did, the chances are equally high that it was the most crowded machine in the room. The MvC series found success on...

As it crawls up to its eleventh year Sony’s PlayStation 2 has racked up another sales landmark as it’s announced the console has just shipped 150 million units.
Sony’s official announcement came accompanied by some other eye-swelling stats – the PlayStation 2 can boast a library of 10,828 games, and it’s shifted 1.52 billion units of software since the system launched in Japan in March 2000.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains the top seller, having sold some 17.33...

LittleBigPlanet has a unique look, all its own – a whimsical combination of real-life materials and everyday items used to form an interactive world where you can digitally “play,” much like a small child might, but with rules and goals, making it actual games. In a very real way, LittleBigPlanet makes it “okay” for adults to imagine and play as they did when they were young.
The graphics in LittleBigPlanet 2 are rich, vibrant and whimsical, based on real-life fabrics,...

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that most of those who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of the latest installment in BioWare’s juggernaut space RPG series have little to no experience with the franchise. This puts me in kind of a precarious position, as I’ve been following this series fervently since well before the first game came out (even going so far as buying Drew Karpyshyn’s books on day one). Still, I know my Mass Effect, and I’m always looking...

The success story behind the budding Dead Space franchise is one I’d like to see repeated. Sure, the original Dead Space is a top-of-its-class action game, but it’s the collective brainchild of an internal development studio at EA — a company not particularly well-known for ambitious new IPs. No, Dead Space wasn’t flawless, and it wasn’t cut from an entirely new kind of cloth. But when the execution is spot-on, who cares? That seems to be the design mantra for the...
