PC Game: Risen 2: Dark Waters

I just finished Risen 2: Dark Waters this week, and left with a better impression than I would have when I first began playing it. There are still some issues Piranha Bytes is working out (at least in the PC version), but the strengths of this piratical adventure through Risen’s fantasy world outweighed them. One thing Risen 2 got absolutely right was the sights and sounds of the Southern Seas, particularly the voice-acting. Pirates curse and complain with gusto and imagination, leading...

PC Game: The Walking Dead: Episode 1 – A New Day

The Walking Dead: Episode 1 – A New Day kicks off a five-part episodic game taking place in Robert Kirkman’s zombie apocalypse universe. Unlike the TV series though, this game doesn’t follow Rick, Shane and the other main characters from the comics. Instead, Telltale Games introduces fans to a new group of core characters, but makes a habit of bringing in some familiar ones when it’s appropriate and doesn’t contradict the comic’s series of events. The first detail...

Battlefield 3 PC Double XP Weekend Delayed

Posted by on May 12, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Yep, even in-game events are not immune to the delays that we’ve come to expect as PC gamers. While the internet initially listed this weekend as Battlefield 3’s first Double XP event for all platforms, the dates have now shifted for those playing on PC: we’ll instead be playing on May 26th and 27th. The official Battlefield Twitter account says that the event has been rescheduled to give PC players “a full weekend as planned.” I’m not sure what the delay is about,...

Hey, the first documentary episode of Double Fine’s Adventures With Money is now out, thanks to that Kickstarter you backed a couple of months ago. It sure is heartwarming to watch Tim Schafer put your dollars to good use as a third layer of clothing. Wait, what’s that? You didn’t back the venture? Yeah, Schafer knows these things. Luckily, he and his pals at the apple-colored Double Fine offices have opened a Paypal account for additional would-be backers. They thought of everything! You...

Cyanide, the studio behind the game adaptation of the colossal Game of Thrones franchise, has released a video that looks “Behind The Wall” of the RPG’s development. Lead Designer Sylvain Sechi and Director Thomas Veauclin discuss their communication with the book series’ author, George R. R. Martin, how they went about building the game world, and the playable characters. Unfortunately, no word yet on whether we personally will be given the chance to slap Joffrey. Don’t...

Review: Port Royale 3

Posted by on May 11, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Despite a reputation for high adventure, a day in the life of the average Caribbean pirate must have been dreadfully dull, with long stretches at sea and nothing but scurvy to occupy them. Port Royale 3 at least manages to capture the boring nature of life at sea — but other than that I have little good to say about it other than that I don’t think it’ll give anyone scurvy. Port Royale 3’s premise seems like a recipe for an amazing game: as a castaway starting out in a Spanish...
