Rhythm Thief: When Professor Layton Found His Groove

Posted by on Feb 02, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Without a doubt, Rhythm Thief will prove to be one of the oddest 3DS titles released this spring. Focusing on a young thief named Raphael’s quest to find his father, the game mixes touch-based puzzles, beat-based challenges and map-based exploration to create an experience that feels mildly disjointed, yet calls upon some of the ideas of another franchise – Level-5’s Professor Layton. Much of your time in Rhythm Thief is spent between the game’s most entertaining and engaging...

In addition to Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Girl’s RPG, developer Brownie Brown’s (Heroes of Mana, Mother 3) Fantasy Life, a sixth Professor Layton game and Time Travelers, famed Japanese publisher Level-5 is working on another curious 3DS project. Titled Guild 01, this game is a compilation of smaller titles from developers who have worked on Final Fantasy XII, No More Heroes, Seaman and Tactics Ogre. Earlier today Level-5 revealed first screens of Crimson Shroud, the component...

Nintendo DS Game News: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Gets An iOS Release

Posted by on Feb 02, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Capcom turned out a totally sweet Nintendo DS puzzle/adventure game in last year’s Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (technically a 2010 release, in Japan). Those who never got around to playing it now have another opportunity thanks to today’s iOS release of the game in North America. Ghost Trick has been in Japan’s App Store since December 2010, so it’s not exactly brand-spanking-new. That’s good though; any post-release bugs should have long since been worked...

Club Nintendo Adds Game Card Case, New Games

Posted by on Feb 01, 2012 | Leave a Comment

A new month can only mean one thing. No, not rent time (boring!), but rather that new prizes have been added to the Club Nintendo reward catalog. Let the freebies begin! As you can see from the picture above, this February brings us a new game card case – though this one is actually much spiffier than ones that came before. It holds up to 18 DS or 3DS cartridges and comes with four double-sided covers you can switch between (for those who despise math, that means there are eight Nintendo-themed...

Nintendo DS Game News: Ace Attorney Movie Release Plans Include Worldwide Release

I don’t know about you all, but I’ve been keeping a close eye on Takashi Miike’s film adaptation of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Miike is probably best known by gamer-folk for his work on deeply disturbing thriller/horrors like Audition and Ichi the Killer, but he’s always had a soft spot for lighter fare as well. His game adaptation, titled Ace Attorney, screened just last week at the Internation Film Festival Rotterdam and it was followed by a Q&A with the maestro...

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword Review

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword took me by surprise. The newest downloadable title set to hit the 3DS eShop on February 2, this unassuming action adventure takes players on a trip through ancient Japan. You’re put in the wooden shoes of a young samurai tasked with saving Princess Cherry Blossom, the daughter of the gods who has been taken away from the people by an evil force. To bring her back and restore peace, you must battle your way across the map, defeating several menacing bosses along...

Where Are 3DS’s Casual Games?

During a recent investor Q&A, the observation was brought up to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata that the 3DS has seen significant growth in popularity among those who classify themselves as “hardcore” gamers. The system’s adoption among the casual audience, however, has been much slower, largely due to the relative lack of software that would appeal to that kind of player. When asked why the company hasn’t rolled out 3DS versions of popular Touch Generation DS titles...
